“I can’t help but notice you look lost in thought. Is everything okay?”
Wendy turned to him again. “I’ve been invited to be headmistress at the new university.”
His laugh was smooth. It flowed like melted chocolate, stirring her longing further than it should have.
“It means leaving my pack, Zoltar. That’s very difficult for a Lycan to do—especially one my age.” She looked down at her feet. “An old handmaid sure, but I’m very attached to this place…to my pack.”
Standing from the rock, he extended his muscular arm toward her, his fingers relaxed and open. “Walk with me.”
After considering him for a split second, she complied, though she wasn’t entirely sure why. She wanted to sit and ponder her future, not wander around with a Centaur who would surely try to seduce her. Still, she followed him down the path around the lake, hoping no one would see them together and start gossiping about her desperateness for a mate. The Lycan men were on edge when the Centaurs arrived and the Centaurs had sworn an oath to keep their hands to themselves.
Wandering around alone with a single Lycan female wasn’t exactly part of that oath. Wendy’s hopes of finding a mate could be completely devastated if the men thought she was sneaking off in the woods with a horny Centaur male…King or not.
“How much do you now about my race?” He looked at his feet as he walked, his brows pulled together.
Shrugging she turned her attention to the path ahead of them, not daring to gaze at his handsomeness—a potential distraction. “Same as everyone, I guess. You have the ability to seduce females of other species so you can produce more Centaurs…being that Centaurs are only male. You are powerful warriors, fierce in battle.”
He strolled in silence for a moment, nodding as she spoke. “You know, there is far more to us than that.”
“I’m sure there is, Sir.” It was a fine line to walk, keeping a Centaur in check while managing not to be offensive at the same time. Anxiety teetered at the pile of emotions overwhelming her.
“Zoltar, please,” he corrected tilting his head. “Or you can call me ‘Z’ as my friends do.”
“Z?” She giggled. “How new age.”
He smiled then looped his arm in hers as if they’d been friends for ages.
The warmth from his arm permeated through her, giving her an odd sense of elation. She swore she’d have to remind herself to breathe.
“We are the sons of Apollo.”
His words caused an unexpected chuckle to escape her lips once again. “It explains the good looks.” Silently, she chastised herself for that statement. How dare she flirt with him?
“I find it very pleasing you think so,” he said with a wink. “It is true, we are fierce warriors. Fierce, but not invincible. The last female Centaur was killed in the battle with the Lapiths. There has yet to be a female born to our kind. It was our ancestors’ pleas to Apollo allowing us the ability to breed with other species so we would not go extinct. However,” he cleared his throat, “our offspring are not a hundred percent Centaur. They can shift into the form of their mother as well.”
“What? You’re telling me a child could shift to Lycan and to Centaur?” She stopped in her tracks. “How is this possible?”
Releasing her arm he turned to face her. The air around him shimmered and he shifted into a golden wolf briefly before shifting back into his human form. “Yes, it is true.”
She gulped. “Well, Z, if I needed a distraction, you certainly came through for me.”
He bowed. “Now,” he looped his arm in hers once again, “we are also very good at Astrology. We all have individual strengths, as I’m sure Lycans do. I, for one, have a touch of precognition. I’m also a bit of a healer.”
Shifting his eyes, he glanced at her while keeping his head forward. “Care to know why a Lycan of your age looks quite a bit older?”
She could not hide her embarrassment. The desire to jerk her arm loose and run far from him was overwhelming—or perhaps she could crawl under a rock. “Nothing I can change, so why bother?”
“And if one simple kiss from me would turn the clock back for you, would you grace my lips with yours?” He didn’t slow his pace as he waited for her to reply. When she tried to jerk her arm free, he held on a bit tighter.
“What? No.” She wanted to go back to the house, away from Z. She wanted some space so she could focus on the problem at hand…the university, her brother trying to get rid of her, being hopelessly single and aging.
“Your beautiful hair, restored to its former glory, the worry lines erased…the only cost being one simple kiss?” He laughed. “Does the thought of kissing me repulse you that much?”
“No.” She finally pulled her arm free. “I’m not some young pup you can trick into your bed.” She turned her back to him and started off toward the main house. His long legs prevented her stomping pace from putting any distance between them.
He latched onto her hand. “Please. I did not mean to offend you.”
She stopped, causing him to bump into her. The heat from his body sent her senses on fire. She could smell his arousal, meaning he could smell hers. She silently groaned. “Look, I don’t know what you’re playing at.” He was so sexy, standing there in a pair of jeans, hanging low on his hip. His blonde curls bounced when he moved.
“Fuck it.” She meant to give him a quick peck to shut him up, but something else happened. When she stood on her toes, large warm hands cupped her face. His searing lips brushed up against hers, making her limbs feel like putty. Her ears started to ring.
The kiss was slow and tender, but quite respectful. He didn’t shove his tongue in her mouth. He didn’t crush her mouth with his. This…was a first kiss, a tender moment and it melted her.
When he released her, she felt heaviness in her lids.
“That wasn’t too repulsive, I hope.”
Staring at him, she was at a loss for words, or a singular thought.
“I see,” he said with a smile, the thought of rendering her speechless apparently entertaining. “Race you back to the house.” Shifting into his wolf form, he tore off, leaving her behind. Wendy shook her head to clear her mind before shifting and taking off after him. His wolf was large, nearly as large as Grace’s. Wendy figured it had something to do with the royal blood. However, he didn’t spend much time in his wolf form and it was obvious as he was rather slow.
Wendy pushed hard to get next to him. He looked over at her and made a leap to get ahead of her. She dove under him, digging in her hind quarters then sprinted toward the yard, which was only a few feet ahead. When she finally skidded to a stop, the large Centaur-Wolf was skidding up behind her. The both shifted in unison.
“You’re a vivacious runner, Wendy.” He nodded. “Very impressive.”
“Wendy!” Colin stood glaring at Zoltar. She’d just been caught cavorting with a Centaur…by her brother.

#Interview with @AuthorAnitaCox – Saving Grace (Shifter Chronicles) #paranormal #erotic

Interview

Today is a very special day because I get to interview not only a great author BUT a very dear friend, as well as introduce her latest and HOTTEST series the SHIFTER CHRONICLES!! Yes, the cover is sizzling hot but wait until you read the story! I was lucky enough to get the ARC of this book and I’m excited about this series…for those of you who enjoyed the Dirty White Candy series…OMG…THIS series will captivate your hearts, intrigue your minds, and heat up your souls! PLEASE, enjoy today with my dearest friend — Anita!

Hello Anita. Welcome to my blog.

Thank you so much for having me!

Image1First, why don’t you tell us a little bit about this book? Something that’s not in the blurb.

I’ve always enjoyed shifter books, but generally speaking they’re all about how strong the Alpha male is. Saving Grace is about Grace and her strength not only as a Lycan, but as a leader. Through adversity she grows into the leader the Lycans need.

This new series has an overall plot. We will continue to see strong women in the battlefield and in the bedroom.

What adversities did you face as an aspiring author?

The learning curve is enormous. Just because you did well writing in school or college does not mean you know how to write a novel. Hell, even being a great storyteller does not make you a decent novelist. Once I learned the ins and outs of the actual craft (and yes, I’m still learning) then I had to learn about covers, blurbs, queries and platform. Even then, a lot has changed since I began in 2006.

What do you believe is your best marketing tool to sell your books?

Word of mouth. No amount of money spent on marketing can compare to someone who loves a book and tells everyone about it.

What do you think is the biggest misconception that readers have about authors in general?

We sit down, write the book in a week or so and voila! A best-seller is made! I can’t speak for every writer but I work upward of 16 hours a day, spend most days in my PJs or sweats with my hair in a knotted bun and work myself to death.

How much research do you put into your books before writing them?

That’s dependent upon the project. The most time I ever spent researching for a book was three months. I had an entire ream of paper printed out of historic events and calendars that went back into the 1800s. That’s probably the last historical piece I’ll ever do.

Why did you choose this genre to write?

It’s probably my favorite genre to read. I love shifters, paranormal and supernatural ideologies. It just fascinates me and taps into that part of the brain that is so active when you are young. Anything is possible.

What makes all your long hours of writing worth it?

Nothing really. I do this because I love it and THAT makes it worth my time. Leaving behind a legacy, even a tiny one, is worth it. This is who I am. This is what I was. This is what made me Anita Cox.

If you can say one thing to your readers, what would that be?

I can’t thank my readers enough. Every review, every comment, and every recommendation of my book you make…it really does matter. I see it and it fills me with joy.

Sinfully Fun

If you were granted 3 wishes what would they be?

  • I would love to have an actual cock for a day. Just one, I don’t want to be a man. I just want to have my own to play with, write my name in the snow with and give it a couple of tugs to see what you guys enjoy so much. Oh, and I’d get a blow job for sure.
  • I’d love to be rich so I didn’t have to stress about money. When I mean rich, I don’t mean living in a mansion, just enough to take care of the family and me. That’s rich enough.
  • Gimme a nice rack. Something that would look great in a bikini.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Tiramisu

Do you have any hidden talents? 😉

I’m an avid angler, gardener, chef, cake decorator and mechanic.

Would you rather….

Read a paperback or on an ereader? Paper

Drink champagne or beer? Champagne

Heels or flats? Heels, preferably thigh high leather boots.

Facebook or Twitter? YouTube

Go to the beach or go to a wintery mountain retreat? Beach! Give me a drink with an umbrella served by a semi-naked cabana boy!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Thank you again for having me.

All of the buy links for Saving Grace are on my publisher’s page. http://www.synpublishing.com/anita-cox.html

blurbAlready struggling with her royal status, Lycan Princess Grace McGovern faces the challenge of accepting a mate. The very sexy Roman LaRossa, is already infatuated with Grace. He’s also her pack’s Beta. As Grace’s was raised in the human world, she is determined to bring Lycan women’s rights up to speed, bringing them equality and protection for the violence they face from the Scottsboro pack’s supernatural puppy mill. Can Grace succeed in her goals or will the Scottsboro pack win by kidnapping her and using her to breed her royal blood into their pack until there’s nothing left of her?

Jagger Merrell, Alpha of the Scottsboro pack, takes great pride in his need to bring an end to the Lycan Clan and will do anything and everything he can to bring it and their too independently minded Princess, Grace McGovern to her knees. Will he finally rule the Kingdom of Lycan and tame this odd Alpha Princess once and for all?

Roman, the Belfast Pack’s Beta, has always loved Grace but will his chauvinist and controlling ways cause her to refuse him as her King?

Can Grace find love with Roman? Can Roman save her from Jagger? Who will win this battle of wills to rule the Kingdom of the Lycan?

excerpt

Roman spotted Grace pulling into the drive and walked to the back of the house. He stood at the tree line gazing at the forest when he heard heavy footprints—too heavy for a Lycan female—crunching toward him. He spun around to see Grace, her jaw set, moving with such determination it made him brace himself.

“Can I have five minutes of your time?” she asked, hands on her hips, her tone filtering in on the spicy side. Something was bothering her.

He smiled in hopes of brightening her mood. “You can have ten.”

“Where can we talk? Privately?” Her brows pulled in and her head was pointed slightly forward.

“Our princess looks determined!”

Roman held in his laugh. “We might be in trouble.”

“We might be breeding.”

He tried not to roll his eyes. “Patio.” He led her over to the veranda and took a seat next to her on the bench. “What can I do for you?”

“Oh you can do a lot for me. First, we’re about to have a very frank discussion. I realize it’s not a very Lycan thing to do, but we’re going to put all of our cards on the table. Right here. Right now.” She crossed her arms over her chest.

Roman tried hard not to look at how her arms squeezed her boobs together. “Um…okay?” He was Beta. Why was he taking orders from her?

“So you want to be mated to me?” Her eyes narrowed at him as her soprano voice sank into an accusing tone.

His heart thundered in his chest. “What? I’m sorry.” He shook his head. He couldn’t have heard her right. “What?” She couldn’t possibly believe he had planned out her future without her consent. His lips curved down at the very thought.

“You heard me. You have plans or hopes to be mated to me?” She leaned in and squinted her eyes. The pressure in his chest increased, and his stomach burned in unison. Her look was so stern, so accusatory. How could he make her understand?

“Well,” he started. How do I answer her?

His wolf made a sound that somewhat resembled a laugh. “Start with the truth.”

“Roman?”

He pulled his shoulders back, sitting a little straighter. He had to make her understand, but he didn’t want to make his position seem worse than it apparently had. He wanted her, he wanted all of her, but he wasn’t going to force it on her. “Yes.” One word answer. That can’t get me into trouble. Can it?

“And you think I have no say in the matter?” Her accusing eyes honed in on him. He could hear his heart beat in his ears.

“Of course you do. Mates choose each other unless it’s an arranged marriage and neither one of your parents are around to make such an arrangement.” He gulped. Did she really think he’d force a mating on her? He tried to quash the offensive question now burned in his gut.

“But you’re pulling away from me. Why?”

He took a deep breath, relieved that the thought of being mates wasn’t objectionable to her, but that she was more concerned with his hesitation. Still, he wasn’t sure where she stood, what she wanted. He wanted to tread lightly but she was making it abundantly clear, that was not the path they were going to take. “I’m not pulling away. I’m trying not to rush you. You’ve just become one with your wolf. You just met us. You’re just and only now thinking of us as your pack. Having a mate is serious. I don’t want you to take too much on at once. I don’t want to put you in a position where you’ve bonded with me and regret it. I want my mate to want me back, or it’s just not worth it.”

She raised an eyebrow at him. “But you do want me?”

Yes! Yes, with every fiber of my being! He nodded and allowed a smile to spread across his face. “Very much.”

“When did you know?”

“Before I even found you. My wolf was fairly insistent you were, uh, the one.” He wiped his sweaty hands on his jeans as he tried to force himself to relax. “But since I first met you, felt your presence, I knew. And our first time was during your heat. I didn’t know if it was me, or the heat, or if you…but then, on our last run. You made that part clear.”

“Have you bonded before?”

His jaw fell slack. “You really don’t understand bonding very well yet. No. I have never bonded. If I had, and no longer had that mate, I’d be withdrawn, like Colin.”

“I still don’t understand that.” Her shoulders slumped forward. “I don’t understand a lot, apparently.” She looked slightly defeated.

He wanted to help her, help her understand him, the pack and Lycan love. He thought for a moment. “You know how they talk about amputees—how they mourn their limb. They feel it itch, when it’s not even there.”

“Yeah?”

“Colin mourns his mate every day. Her thoughts are no longer in his mind. He aches for her. His mind is constantly searching for hers, for the sound of her voice. His wolf cries for hers. It’s like purgatory for the heart.”

Grace leaned over like the wind had been knocked out of her. “Wow.”

“Yeah.” And she gets it.

She lifted her eyes and stared at him. Her blank expression morphed into determination, as if she found the words she’d been searching for. “I want us to date. I enjoyed making love to you and I’d very much like to do it again. But when you pull back, I feel rejected. I don’t like that feeling. Okay?” She bit her lip for a brief second, then gave him one affirmative nod as if to make her point.

He looked at her, open and vulnerable, yet strong. His feelings toward her grew so fast it had him off balance. Remembering how he nearly panicked when he had to wait for her to agree to join the Belfast pack, he quickly answered. “I understand.”

She let out a breath of air as if she had been holding it for an hour.

He released his own, as relief washed over him. She did want him, she just wanted some control over her own life. Knowing he could easily respect those boundaries filled him with joy.

“And when I’m getting serious, when I’m thinking about bonding, we will talk about it, like adults. Like responsible adults. No hiding from each other.” She wagged her finger.

A smile grew on his lips he couldn’t hide. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Okay, as Beta of my pack, I want you to know the vampires sent my doctor old books they want me to read. Doc says he’s sure they’ll be visiting us soon. Or maybe he said he’s surprised they haven’t visited. Anyway, don’t be shocked by vampires coming to see us.”

“Wait! They gave you the books?” He stood up. “The books?”

“Yes. And I’m not to share them with anyone. The doctor made it clear these were royal secrets that were not to be shared. I promised him, and the vampires through him, not to violate the trust they placed in me. Not you, not Colin, no one can make me break that promise.” She stood and moved so close to him, he could feel the heat off of her body. “Do you understand?”

“But, you don’t understand. No pack has seen those for three or four generations…at least.”

“Roman…”

He held up his hands. “I respect your wishes. But I am going to tell Colin.” The history books contained secrets the Lycans had been coveting for years. His curiosity overwhelmed him. He wanted to see, to peek, to gain some of what was so secret.

She squinted her eyes at him and his heart fluttered. He grabbed her by the arms and pulled her in, planting a kiss firmly on her sweet, full lips. He felt her body relax into him, her shoulders easing down and the pressure of her, leaning against him.

“See. She’s already ours.” His wolf wagged its tail.

Roman released her and gave her a devilish smile. “When you’re ready to finish what you started in the woods, just say the words.”

Her jaw flexed as she stepped back from him. If he didn’t know better, he’s swear she was trying to hide a smile.

Guest Post and #Giveaway with author Kim Mullican – Thicker Than Water #Mystery #Suspense

guestpost

The Human Condition

First, I want to thank Houston for letting me knock her unconscious and allowing me to take over her page today.  She’ll be awake with you soon.

Backstory is something you have to treat with delicate hands when writing a novel. You can’t flood a novel with backstory. That’s a huge faux pas for an author.

Each character has their own backstory, what’s shaped and molded them over time to the interesting and unique people they are today. When writing Thicker Than Water, I put a lot of time into each character and their backstory. Who or what caused Michelle Mott to decide to be a P.I.? How did Marty, an otherwise smart kid and straight A student to live on the streets and try to steal Michelle’s bag? Why is Daniel, this sexy tall Italian boy, so socially awkward one minute, then acting like a sex starved predator the next? And why on earth does Helen put up with them all and more importantly, decide to mother them all in her own unique way?

The dynamic between them is easy to define as you read the book… they become more than friends.  They become family.

Enter Gino Salito, the local crime lord who has everyone quaking in their boots. Gino is handsome and charming but he has blood on his hands. Nothing is black and white where Gino Salito is concerned, it’s very gray and readers are finding that they love my mobster, despite his murderous past and less than legal ways.

With Michelle knocking on death’s door, the ties that bind are stretched in a manner that will leave you wondering if blood really is thicker than water.

Okay, I’m off to rouse Houston. Hopefully she’ll forgive the bump on the head.

blurbBlood may be thicker than water, but family isn’t necessarily who you’re related to. In this suspenseful mystery with a romantic twist, we follow Private Investigator Michelle Mott on her most exciting case to date.

Wisecracking Mott has been a loner since her parents died. When Daniel Cardinale walks into her office with her most interesting case yet, his world threatens to turn hers upside down. He needs her to find out who is sending him anonymous money and what the truth is behind his dead fiancé’s demise. If his case weren’t complicating her life enough, local crime lord Gino Salito has taken an interest in Mott.

Mott’s empty life begins to fill up with an unexpected and rag-tag group of people, and she’s afraid her dangerous life will take them away, leaving her alone once again.

In truth, it’s Mott’s life that may be the one at risk. She’ll have to hope that blood isn’t always thicker than water.

excerptI am about to die. I don’t mean in the Sylvia Plath-we’re-all going-to-die-sometime sort of way. In mere moments, the meathead behind the barrel of the handgun held to my temple will pull the trigger. The hammer will come down, igniting a tiny explosion that will send a lead ball tearing through my cranium. My brains, bones and blood will spray on the area beside me. I won’t even hear a click. I won’t feel a thing. Idiots. This is the least creative way to murder someone.

And the suicide note they had me write sounds nothing like me. No one is going to believe I committed suicide. If they watched one episode of one crime show they’d know I needed gun powder residue on my hands, not duct tape residue on my wrists. This has to be the worst faked suicide in history. That’s what you get when you hire steroid induced freaks with the IQ of a cannoli.

I should have known this would happen. Wrong guy in your bed, you get a little nosey and this is where you wind up. Cold barrel pressed against your temple by some guy who doesn’t even fully understand why his boss wants you expired. Nor does he care. He doesn’t even care that his boss is too much of a puss to pull the trigger himself.

I should be crying or begging for my life. But I’m not. I’m sitting here like a limestone statue: cold, calm…it’s sort of creepy, actually. Fear and panic should be knocking at my door. Instead an unexpected feeling of calm was all I had. Maybe I knew this was a possibility.

About the AuthorA new pic3

Anita Cox has an affinity with leather and high-heeled boots. The same vivacious attitude can be found in her erotic adventure and erotic romance. With her rock star husband, she plays in the lifestyle in which she writes, adding authenticity to her voice.

Anita likes to add strong female characters, even if they are a bit quirky. Her men are hot with just enough flaws to make them loveable.
