Hearts Akilter by Catherine E. McLean {@CatherineMcLea7} #Scifi #Romance #ASMSG

HeartsAkilter_w9882 high resolutionblurbLove, vengeance, attempted murder, and a bomb…No reason to panic.

When a medical robot insists he’s having a heart attack, Marlee Evans, a pragmatic maintenance technician, has every reason to panic. There’s a bomb inside him.  Since Marlee can’t risk the bomber discovering she’s found the device, her only option is to kidnap Deacon Black, an unflappable bomb expert, and secretly convince him to disarm it.  Things go slightly awry when Deacon sets a trap for someone who is trying to kill him, and inadvertently captures Marlee instead.  Instantly intrigued by her refreshingly forthright and gutsy attitude, he’s smitten.  Unfortunately for Deacon, Marlee recently hardened her heart and swore off men, especially handsome ones with boy-next-door grins.  But as Marlee and Deacon attempt to identify and prevent the bomber from detonating the device, they discover that love may be the most explosive force of all.

HEARTS AKILTER

By Catherine E. McLean @ 2015

The bomb. Right. Dismantle the bomb. In this lift? No, that was insane. “Marlene, if the bomb goes off accidentally—”

“It’ll blow the station to kingdom come?”

He nodded.

“Not to worry.”

She said that with such nonchalance that he found himself speechless. He cleared his throat. “Why not? Did you snatch the portable Bomb Disposal Unit, too?”

“Better.”

“What’s better than a BDU?”

“Garbage incinerators.”

“What?” He glanced out into the darkness beyond the lift.

Giant machinery stood silhouetted and veiled in shadows. “Where are we?”

“Deck forty-three, Ring D zero three. Relax. Don’t panic.  They once accidentally incinerated a torpedo in number four, over yonder.”

She pointed to the left. “Nobody heard or felt it explode, and there wasn’t even a drail’s worth of damage done to the incinerator, or anything else.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“It happened three years ago. I was there, a deck above.

Never mind.”

Henry manipulated his finger appendage, grabbing and briefly tugging the shirt sleeve of Deacon’s good arm. “Marlee would never lie about anything so important.”

“Does she lie about unimportant things?” He instantly regretted his caustic remark.

“I do not know.” Henry spun sideways, facing Marlee. “Do you lie about unimportant things, Marlee?”

“I have been known to tell a white lie now and then to spare someone’s feelings, but on the whole—” She looked away from Henry.

As her blacker than black eyes met his gaze, Deacon felt pinned to the wall.

Talk dirty to me, scifi

In my misspent youth, I was a voracious reader and among the many genres I tried and devoured was science fiction. This was hardcore scifi where no fictional spaceship was allowed to blast off in a story, and no warp-travelling wormhole was allowed to send you hurtling across the galaxy, unless the author could explain it somehow with physics and maths.

Hard science fiction. So hard your brain melted a bit reading them.

Now? I’d rather my stories melt panties. Defiler is a part of the Preyfinder series and the only hard in this scifi are the men. It’s a dirty, depraved story world but with a plot that will make you bite your nails and scream a little as the ending rolls toward you. I’ve even thrown in lashings of fantasy because it made the story far more FUN. Fun is what I need in my stories, along with the sex. This is an erotic tale and though some of the romantic/ erotic scifi out there is light on plot, that’s not this book. If I can’t make you wonder what in all the seven realms of alien hell is about to happen in this one, I’ve not done my job.

Imagine a mash-up of Serenity or Star Wars along with some epic fantasy stirred in with a few orgies from Game of Thrones and you have Defiler.

Since I do like dubious consent in my stories, you’ll find that a part of the sexuality, but there’s never any doubt that Talia is having the time of her life. Many women have rape fantasies (one of the commonest sexual fantasies of women) and erotic reads like these are as safe, sane, and consensual a way to indulge those fantasies as anyone can get. Not exactly bodice ripper in space, but that is the general background theme in the Preyfinder stories.

Talia is no pushover, though she has a lust for big, alien men with sexual equipment to die for, she’s also a strong, brave, and smart forensic pathologist. A man tangles with her at the risk of having his spleen removed with a swish of her katana. Read Defiler and find out how Brask and Dassenze manage to dodge her sword and drag her into bed with them.

rosepagebreak60

blurbOur Earth is on the edge of destruction, our cities are pocked with missile craters, and beneath the surface the alien factory queen lurks.

Four women of power may be our saviors. The last is Talia. Gifted by earth magic with a mastery of edged weapons, she’s a katana-wielding, geek chick with a loathing of alpha men. Although mating enhances magic, she knows bonding with aliens must surely be wrong. Besides, her destined bond mate, Brask, is an Igrakk warrior of the caveman persuasion. One dominant male is bad enough. Dassenze, the alien man-god in the flesh, also desires her and no isn’t a word he appreciates.

As they near their target, Talia’s man problems become the lesser of many evils, for the factory queen awaits them with her nerve chewers and her drills. The price for being avenging, kickass heroines could be a messy death.

Warning: Dominance and submission themes, hot aliens, and violence. Mild horror too if you’re squeamish.

Available at     Amazon     iTunes     BN

excerpt

Talia approached the door, chair in hand, feeling like a lion tamer, and wedged the chair against the door knob. It worked in the movies.

“Go away! I’ll come and see you after I’m done. To talk about whatever it is you want to talk about.”

“If you’re there, on the other side, you can let me in.”

He was going to wait for her to let him in? Ho hum and yawn.

“No, I cannot. Asshole.” She said that to herself as she backed away, grinning. There was a thrill to calling Brask bad names, akin to poking a monkey with a stick. A big, slightly-annoyed monkey.

His sigh sounded exasperated. “Do you have any idea how good my hearing is? Or whatever this other sense is. I can tell when you’re aroused.”

She snorted. “Tough.”

His next move was to smash his fist through the door, sending splinters flying, then he shoved aside the chair and opened the door from the inside.

“Damn,” she muttered. “Impressive.”

Running on ceilings was impressive too but this was a whole other realm – a man who would smash down a door to get to her.

Scary as hell.

Keeping her expression defiant was difficult. She found herself cycling between a smirk and an oh-shit-what-have-I-done expression. Fear had some plusses. Excitement for one. He wouldn’t hurt her and she wasn’t going to hurt him, but her heart was pounding away like it wasn’t sure.

Now she had an annoyed Brask on her side of the door. He kicked it farther open and took a step inside as the handle hit the wall and the door swung back in a foot.

“I see you’re ready for me. Nice underwear.”

Breathless, she gathered her reply. “I wasn’t expecting guests. Maybe you should leave?”

“I only just arrived. But if you insist.” But then he stepped closer, until she had to tilt her head back farther to keep the encounter eye-to-eye. Between the width of his shoulders, general body bulk, and the way his blond spiky hair seemed ready to brush the ceiling, he was making her feel like a small female snack.

Never look away from a predator, right? On shuffling back a step, she found the coffee table pressing at her bare legs.

Insolently and probably stupidly, she angled a brow. “Leaving means going in the other direction.”

“It does?”

“Yes.”

He crowded her some more until only inches separated them and she could feel his body heat. She didn’t dare shut her eyes. She was faster than him, but that wasn’t everything. Not at all. But he didn’t lunge at her, instead he very deliberately reached out and around her, with both hands, and took a grip of the back of her hair. Then he screwed both hands in and twisted, thoroughly trapping her.

Something stopped her resisting. Probably raw unadulterated lust. She licked her lips, waiting. When he remained silent, she couldn’t resist asking a question.

“Now what are you going to do? My hairstyle?”

This might be because she comes from the land down under, Australia, or it could be her excessive consumption of wine.

Military and Ships

If your world has an army, navy, or other branch of service, consider how ranks are listed. The naming of ships should follow protocols. It doesn’t matter what the protocols are, but it does matter that you use a consistent system. Organizations pivot on protocols. What makes an army effective is its ability to move as a unit. That is one reason armies adopt uniforms. The sight of a mass of people, all moving in a unified manner, can strike fear into the heart of an enemy. Use that to advantage in your books.

Uniform and other codes can be found online. Here’s a link to a PDF published by the Military Quartermaster detailing requirements for an Enlisted Aide. It contains pictures, placements of uniform items, and more, for all ranks within the military. http://www.quartermaster.army.mil/jccoe/Special_Programs_Directorate/Enlisted_Aide_web_documents/navy%20ea%20handbook.pdf

Also try this site for links and other documents for military reference. http://www.quartermaster.army.mil/

Military ships and aircraft have naming protocols. If you create your own, follow them. On my worlds, the officers on board starships do not carry Navy designations (such as ensign), but instead use the same as those found in the Air Force. If you do this, be consistent. Be sure you know to whom members of a rank report. Your readers are likely to, and they won’t like it if you have someone reporting to the wrong rank.

What War Was That?

When I wrote the future history for my series, I studied the patterns of the past. Wars punctuate human history. We refer to them as eras (the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War II, etc.) and certain aspects are attributed to each. When we hear “Viet Nam Era” we envision a specific time of history, and also a culture. When creating your future history, keep these things in mind. If your people have been peaceful for centuries, how has that affected their culture? Be aware of these concepts as you write.

Also consider what kind of morality drives wars. Is it a requirement that your people seek new worlds to inhabit? Why? Did they destroy theirs? Did aliens invade? Did a supernova destroy their solar system? Were they exiled? All these things shape social structure for your characters.

Government and Law

Consider how your people govern themselves, and the premises behind their laws. My Tarthian Empire series contains references to slaves. I created some basic laws so I could have characters break them and use them to become free. Remember the importance of consistency. If it’s a law in one book, it better still be one in another, or have a reason that it no longer matters.

Quotes from the book:

“Yes. I know all about soul-wraiths.” Ramsey frowned. “How did you avoid them in the past?”

“Set a perimeter of energized diaman crystal. That will keep them at bay.” Hel smiled without humor. “I have the diaman crystal in my saddle pack. I lack a sexual partner to energize them. I had intended to return with a magistra but a magister will work as well. Care to volunteer?”

“Only if I top,” Ramsey snapped.

“You’d have to kill me first,” returned Hel.

“With pleasure.”

Steffania took a breath. Ram cut her off. “No. I don’t share you, Vixen.”

Fear of the unknown almost froze Adonia’s tongue, but she was the obvious answer. She could do this. The opportunity would never present itself again. “I’ll be your partner.”

He would have seduced her into the erotic world his particular carnality demanded and reveled in the passionate response he knew he could draw from her. She would submit to him gladly. The Goddess had created her for it. The woman gloried in serving.

Sadly, his world was not that world any longer. Brutal practicality stripped his relationships of any niceties and turned sex into another duty performed for those who looked to him for protection.

Steffania shook her head in mock sorrow. “I’ve heard it said people never grow up. They merely learn how to behave in front of others.” She leaned over and whispered loudly, “Ramsey has done neither.”

“It’s a delicious contradiction. He is never more wholly mine than when I am under his total control, in complete service to him.”

rosepagebreak60

excerptA third male crossed his arms over his chest and with a low rumble of laughter, relaxed his stance. “DeHelios. Ha! The last time I saw you, you sprawled unconscious in a shrub leaving a lovely piece of horseflesh in need of an owner.”

Hel studied the speaker. He knew that laconic drawl—but its owner was a criminal with no love for Verdantian nobility. What was this man doing here? “Ramsey DeKieran, you nefarious thief! You owe me the price of that fine horse. You fell on me from a tree, you coward. I never had a chance.”

Ramsey snorted. “Still an egotistical ass. You should be grateful I took only the horse. Your head is still nicely attached.” He caught the eyes of the other two men. “Gentlemen, that tower of smelly fur is ‘Hel’. You may know him by a different name. The Haarb called him bás dtost—the silent death.” Ramsey rolled his eyes.

Hel raised his lip in a snarl at Ramsey’s mockery. “Such illustrious company, DeKieran. Your status in the world seems to have risen—but then it could hardly have fallen lower.”

Ramsey grunted. “Unlikely, eh? You may address me as Lord DeKieran, Fifteenth Earl of House DeKieran, and the striking redhead preparing to unman you from ten feet away is my wife, Lieutenant Colonel Steffania Rickard of the Queen’s Blue Daggers. Be careful with your words, Hel. My vixen is wicked with a throwing knife and takes insults to me personally.”

Hel arched an eyebrow in surprise and nodded at the glorious redhead measuring him with amused golden eyes. “Ma’am, my condolences on your marriage. I assume you had no choice.”
